69-Year-Old Man Charged After Two Bank Robberies Reported in Makiki

A quiet afternoon in Honolulu’s Makiki neighborhood quickly turned into an active police investigation after two banks were targeted within minutes. Authorities have now charged a 69-year-old man in connection with both incidents, while detectives continue to examine the case. The arrests and updated charges have drawn attention because of how quickly the events unfolded.

The Honolulu Police Department charged Michael Hooper on Wednesday, July 1, with two counts of Robbery in the Second Degree. The court set his aggregate bail at $100,000.

Police said the first incident took place at 2:53 p.m. on Monday, June 29, at a bank on South Beretania Street. Investigators said the suspect entered the bank, demanded money from a teller, but left without receiving any cash.

Just four minutes later, at 2:57 p.m., the suspect allegedly entered another bank on Piʻikoi Street, again demanded money, and fled the scene on foot after obtaining cash.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Officers quickly found a man who matched the suspect's description near the scene. Investigators later identified Michael Hooper as the suspect in both robberies and arrested him. Police confirmed that no one suffered injuries during either incident.

Police first arrested Hooper on one count of Robbery in the Second Degree and one count of Robbery in the First Degree. Prosecutors later filed two counts of Robbery in the Second Degree instead.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the case, and the Honolulu Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing.
