Ralph Macchios Portfolio deutet darauf hin, dass er vor seiner ersten Filmrolle in The Karate Kid als Kinderdarsteller in der Werbung gearbeitet hat. Als Kind spielte er auch mit einigen der größten Stars der Gegenwart, zum Beispiel mit Tom Cruise und Matt Dillon in The Outsiders.
